Training in Tre-lai

Pools, classes and the River Ely.

Western Leisure Centre on Caerau Lane is the big public facility, run by Better: a gym with cardio and free weights, a 25-metre pool for lane swimming, a teaching pool, a family splash area and a sports hall set up for badminton, basketball and pickleball. Classes run from aqua fitness and group cycle to boxfit, circuits and strength conditioning, with over-50s and women-only sessions. Ellis's Fitness Centre is the independent, built around group classes and family fitness, and Omega Dancercise brings dance fitness.

Ely held its first horse race in 1855, on a racecourse long since gone, and the River Ely still marks its eastern edge. Cardiff Bus 17 and 18 run every 10 minutes from Wood Street via Canton, and Waun-Gron Park station is about 10 minutes' walk over Ely Bridge, so meeting a training partner from elsewhere in the west of the city is straightforward.

Getting there

  • Cardiff Bus 17/18 · every 10 minutes from Wood Street
