Training in Strangeways
Bouldering, CrossFit and a council pool.
Strangeways takes its name from the Strangeways Park and Gardens on which the prison was built, and the prison's 234-foot ventilation tower is still a local landmark. For training there's Rock Over Climbing for bouldering, CrossFit Central Manchester, Made Hub, Cheetham Hill Sports Club and two PureGyms, on Bury New Road and at Cheetham Hill Retail Park. Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre in Crumpsall is the council option, with a 25 m pool, a teaching pool, two gyms, squash courts, a sauna and an ECB urban cricket hub.
Bouldering is one of the most sociable ways to train: you rest between problems and talk through the moves with whoever's on the mat. If you'd like a regular climbing or lifting partner, Gymist helps you find one nearby.
